A Visit to WAGS

Councillor A Jackson at a meeting of the Westhoughton Allotment and Gardening Society.

I was given a warm welcome at Westhoughton Allotment and Gardening Society on Thursday 19 th October, 2023.

I talked to them about The Big Plant and my experiences delivering daffodils to schools and community groups and planting with volunteers at Diddy Bottle Park and Westhoughton Park. Jack Speight, Councillor Westhoughton First Independents gave a powerpoint presentation.

The Big Plant seems to have really hit a positive chord with the community from the eco leaders in the schools to our youngest planter aged almost 2 years who joined in at our second planting day in the park . In total 4,000 daffodils will be planted to brighten up Westhoughton next spring.

Harry , far right in the photo, gave me a list of bulbs he suggests for next year to attract bees, our pollinators. Top of Harrys list for next year are crocuses and snowdrops. The schools suggested bluebells and snowdrops. Members of the group have offered to help us plant next year as well as sharing their gardening expertise.

They are a really friendly group and if you would like to join them they meet the 3 rd Thursday of the month from 7 to 9 pm at The John Holt Centre Birch Ave, Westhoughton, BL5 2NR
